History of PWDs - In Portuguese, the breed is called cão de água (IPA: [ˈkɐ̃w dɨ ˈaɡwɐ]; literally 'dog of water'). In Portugal, the dog is also known as the Algarvian Water Dog (cão de água algarvio), or Portuguese Fishing Dog (cão pescador português).
The Portuguese Water Dog is an ancient working breed that originated along the coast of Portugal, where it was prized by fishermen for its strength, intelligence, and swimming ability. These dogs helped herd fish into nets, retrieved lost tackle, and even carried messages between boats and shore. Their webbed feet, waterproof coat, and strong build made them perfectly suited for life in the water.
By the early 20th century, the breed nearly went extinct as modern fishing methods replaced their jobs. Thanks to dedicated Portuguese breeders who preserved and revived the line, the Portuguese Water Dog survived and eventually gained international recognition. Today, they’re loved not only for their history as hardworking maritime partners but also for their loyal, energetic, and family-friendly nature.
