This dog carries one copy of the mutation for improper coat (IC) and one copy of F and will therefore have

furnishings (proper coat). This dog does not carry the mutation for weak furnishings. However, the overall coat

type of this dog is dependent on the combination of this dog's genotypes at the L, Cu, and IC loci. This dog will

pass IC (improper coat) to 50% of its offspring and F (furnishings, proper coat) to 50% of its offspring. Therefore,

this dog can produce puppies with improper coat if bred with a dog that carries one copy (F/IC) or two copies

(IC/IC) of the mutation for improper coat.

IC Locus (Improper Coat/Furnishings) RSPO2 F/IC Furnishings (improper coat carrier)

Note - Saylor is only bred with Oscar who has 2 copies of furnishings (F/F).

Their offspring will not produce puppies with an improper coat.

Coats and Colors

Puppy Coats from Sayor/Oscar Cross: They can NOT produce an Improper Coat. Not possible due to their DNA. Colors they produce Brown Parti, Black Parti, Brown with White Markings, Black with White Markings, Solid Black, Solid Brown. Hair Coat Variety - Runs from Oscar's Curly (comes from his Champion Bloodline father) to Saylor's Loose Curl to a More Wavy (Oscar's Mom is a Wavy coat). So there is a wide variety of colors and coats that come in the litter from Saylor/Oscar cross. As you can see from the pictures of the litters - the puppies are beautiful.

The Coat Varieties of our Breeding Sire and Dames:

Oscar (the Sire) - has a more curly coat. It is a beautiful jet black. We keep it cut down close of the time because of the warm weather in Alabama. Especially after a fresh haircut, his coat feels like velvet.

Saylor (Dame) - her coat is considered a loose curl. It is chocolate brown with what we call "frosting" - meaning some white hair frosting her coat. Most Brown PWDs are frosted. Her hair is absolutely beautiful.

Brandi (Dame to be) - her coat is a dark chocolate wave. She is still a puppy so she doesn't have her adult coat yet. She is a precious sweet girl. Watch for pictures of her as she grows. Planning of puppies from her when she is 2 years old after all of her health checks are completed.

Testing Performed on our Dames and Sires

Our testing includes but is not limited to the testing listed below recommeded by the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (PWDCA).

The health testing criteria recommended by the PWDCA for breeders of Portuguese WaterDogs consist of:

1. Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) hip certification (obtained at 2 years of age or older) on both the stud dog and brood bitch prior to mating, utilizing dogs who have received a passing hip score (fair, good, or excellent rating)

2. A current (yearly) Eye Certification Registry (ECR) certification (passing rating) on both the stud dog and brood bitch at the time of breeding - up to the age of 120 months

3. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (prcd-PRA) – Genetic test at Optimal Selection or certification of DNAparentage analysis via the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) DNA parentage clear program on the stud dog or the brood bitch prior to mating, with one parent, either sire or dam, testing normal (noncarrier) via the genetic test at Optimal Selection or certified clear (non-carrier) via the Canine HealthInformation Center (CHIC) DNA parentage clear program.

4. Early Onset Progressive Retinal Atrophy (EOPRA) – Genetic test at Optimal Selection or certification ofDNA parentage analysis via the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) DNA parentage clear program on the stud dog or the brood bitch prior to mating, with one parent, either sire or dam, testing normal (non-carrier) via the genetic test at Optimal Selection or certified clear (non-carrier) via the CanineHealth Information Center (CHIC) DNA parentage clear program

5. Microphthalmia Syndrome (MO) – One parent, either sire or dam, testing Normal (non-carrier) via the genetic test at PennGen Labs or certified clear (non-carrier) via the Canine Health Information Center(CHIC) DNA parentage clear program prior to mating.

6. GM-1, Storage Disease (Gangliosidosis) - One parent, either sire or dam, testing normal (non-carrier)via the genetic test at NYU or Optimal Selection or certified clear (non-carrier) via the Canine HealthInformation Center (CHIC) DNA parentage clear program prior to mating.

7. JDCM (Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy) - One parent, either sire or dam, testing normal (noncarrier) via the genetic test done by PennGen at the University of Pennsylvania or certified clear (noncarrier) via the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) DNA parentage clear program prior to mating.

The PWDCA encourages breeders to perform DNA profiles on their breeding stock and follows the current American Kennel Club DNA requirements. Other health testing that may be done are OFA Elbows for evaluation of elbow dysplasia and Improper Coat genetic test IC13 at Optimal Selection. The PWDCA recognizes the importance of multiple factors involved in breeding Portuguese Water Dogs.
